Storm Surge at Offshore Isalnds 

On offshore islands, far from the effects of the continental shelf, storm surge is strongly correlated with atmospheric pressure through the "inverted barometer" relationship:

This is illustrated in the figures below for Chatham Island and Raoul Island, where the fluctuations in IB are matched almost exactly both in timing and amplitude by the fluctuation in storm surge. For these sites, inverted barometer is an excellent indicator of storm surge.
